Catching the fall.
Do you ever feel like,
just moving on?
Whether it is time, or place?
What trails will you mark?
the crushed path of leaves,
or the sandy footprints from beaches,
or the meshed soil that you
Where are the
people you’ve met,
people you’ve shared the same air with,
and the people you will miss?
Wherever it may be,
"My goal is to meet five new friends every week."
"Why is that?"
"Because all of my friends died from heart attack, its probably…probably that heroin. You know how you can know when one is addicted to heroin, its when he does not feel the effect anymore and he has tolerance. But, when they try to stop, they feel all the effects and they go back so they can feel normal again. My friends died of heroin, you see…"
"Is that why your homeless?"
"I became homeless when my sister died of leukemia. My parents went homeless too. You know, I used to be an private investigator? You know, I used to have plenty of money…"
"Hey, whats your name?"
To some, they sit and wait for the bus to come.
To others, they sit and wait for life to move.
Tony, the custodian.
Me: Hey Tony! How are you!?
Tony: I’m good, I’m good! Working again, and you?
Me: I’m good, just working in research and school. Is it possible if I can take a picture of you?
Tony, with a surprised look and a smile: oh..me?
Me: Yeah, I wanna remember you!
Tony: Oh, ok. Take a picture of me away from my cleaning things though. I need to look good.
Tony is our I-House dorm custodian. He checks in to work at 6:00 AM. He cleans about four floors of messy bathrooms everyday. He’s been doing this for over twenty years.
Me: So Tony, when do you retire?
Tony: Oh, I don’t know…boy, after the mayor passed something, I can’t retire without my full benefits. I need to talk to the union and all that. But I’ll go and see next week for a meeting.
Me: Without full benefits? What do you mean?
Tony: If I retire, my family and I will starve. So, I think I will have to put in five or ten more years.
Me: How do you feel about that?
Tony: Ehhhhh, not so good, you know, because I want to retire early and spend time with my family. But it’s good still. I have a job and I am ok with that. Some people do not have jobs.
Me: That’s a good way of thinking.
Tony: Can I take picture with you?
Me:…oh, oh yeah!
Waiting for them to look at my claim…
